The history of water on Mars (and on the terrestrial planets)

On Earth, liquid water has played a fundamental role in the development of life as we know it. None of the other terrestrial planets with an atmosphere – Venus and Mars – has liquid water at its surface today. However, several studies suggest, from geological and atmospheric arguments, that both Venus and Mars could have been partially or completely covered by water at some time during their evolution.
We will reconstruct the history of water on Mars (and on Venus) based on the most recent discoveries by the European missions such as ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, Mars Express, Venus Express, and by ground-based telescopes.
